Sy reviews: Lick by Kylie Scott

~Synopsis~

Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this.

Evelyn Thomas’s plans for celebrating her twenty-first birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure as hell never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

One thing is for certain, being married to rock and roll’s favourite son is sure to be a wild ride.

Clearly, this is exactly what I needed to read after reading something too heavy which almost made my head explode with all its craziness which I was not prepared for. I loved everything about this book! I even liked the break up and David's trust issues and secrets. Is that weird? And I liked how Ev was so honest from start to finish. If you ask me, I think other heroines can take lessons from her.

The story is light but I'd lie if I said I didn't have this huge smile on my face while reading this book. And it's hard to wipe that smile on my face when my mom just burst into my room without knocking first but whatever. Haha! Anyway, this book had the ingredients of a love story I am such a sucker for: The secret past, the other woman from the past who clearly never learned to move the eff on with her life, the oh-my-God-I-just-caught-my-man-kissing-another-woman scene (which by the way was painful to read. I seriously felt Ev’s pain there. I had to check my tears there for a second) the pain, the woo, the grovel (damn I love it when men grovel hee hee) and of course, my favorite, the happy-ever-after. So yeah, it may be a bit predictable but like I said, I dig these things. I've said it before and I'll say it again (wow I sound like Randy Jackson in AI when he's about to say, "dude, you can sing the phonebook"), I have great admiration for authors who can squeeze poetry and music into their writing. So this book having music and all into it because duh it's a rocker series then that makes me love it all the more.

On sidenote, I don't know why it's entitled Lick. Am I missing something here? There was very few licking involved if you ask me (which was very unfortunate). Hee hee. How literal of me. But anyway, in the end it doesn't matter. Lick is a very nice word. Lick lick lick. See? I just sounded naughty and creepy right there. Hahaha! Well, I guess it doesn't really matter. Actually it does to me so someone enlighten me please. ;)

~Playlist~

I think Gavin De Graw’s Stay is the perfect song for this book. I kept picturing David when he was grovelling when I listen to this song. Gotta Have You is like my Ev’s song during the break up. Coz let’s be honest, “no amount of coffee, no amount of crying, no amount of whiskey, no amount of wine, no no no no no, nothing else will do, I gotta have you” are just the words we say when we go through that horrible break up. Although she really didn’t want him back but of course we all know better. Won’t Go Home Without You is for David when he went to Portland. Ain’t that sweet? *swoons* And When The Stars Go Blue is for both David and Ev. I remember when Ev said something about not really bothering what they did or where they went as long as they’re together. So there, I got my happy ever after in this book with my faculties intact and I'm a happy camper, ehem bookworm, again.

 ~Synopsis~

Stalking and restraining orders are a thing of Alayna Wither’s past. With her MBA newly in hand, she has her future figured out—move up at the nightclub she works at and stay away from any guy who might trigger her obsessive love disorder. A perfect plan.

But what Alayna didn’t figure on is Hudson Pierce, the new owner of the nightclub. He’s smart, rich, and gorgeous—the kind of guy Alayna knows to stay away from if she wants to keep her past tendencies in check. Except, Hudson’s fixed his sights on her. He wants her in his bed and makes no secret of it.

Avoiding him isn’t an option after he offers a business proposition she can’t turn down and she’s drawn further into his universe, unable to resist his gravitational pull. When she learns Hudson has a dark history of his own, she realizes too late that she’s fallen for the worst man she could possibly get involved with. Or maybe their less than ideal pasts give them an opportunity to heal each other and finally find the love their lives have been missing.

~Review~

This book surprised me. I was getting into the first few pages of the book and I thought the plot seemed too predictable and familiar: A rich guy who, just by being described in the book I was so mesmerized already, then a girl who of course got so flustered with the rich guy. So I was almost on the verge of saying, “oh no not again” when things got a wee bit interesting. No, scratch that, it got way, way interesting.

So I figured the title can mean a couple of things. Fixed On You because Alayna tends to obsessed on love (borderline stalking, well a restraining order was mentioned) and meeting Hudson, getting to know him, she got a new person to fixate on which of course was a bit worrisome on her part since she has been doing well for the past years. The title can also mean that both Alayna and Hudson need each other to fix, more like heal, each other’s issues and dark past. I’m just trying to sound smart here. Haha!

Anyway, I loved this book. I think I was in a daze throughout the entire story because my goodness, I can’t even describe how hot some of the scenes there were. Whew. *grabs a glass of cold water* And I loved how some parts of the story are written in a way that made me hurt too. Well, that’s the masochist side of me talking. I really felt Alayna’s sadness there, how she felt like she was alone. I get that. And let me just say this, how terrible can Brian be?! I felt like shouting in the book to Brian after all those words he said to Alayna. And do not even get me started on Sophia. Ugh. She’s so horrible. And I think Celia is so fake.

I think the story just ended perfectly. No major cliffhanger there (thank God). Yeah, I still had a lot of questions and that’s why I am so glad there’s a second book. Hudson intrigued me though. I really wished there was little bit of his POV on the book. I really want to know what goes on his mind. What he thought of Alayna. Why he really picked Alayna out of the sea of women he can definitely choose. I had those questions all the time and not knowing almost made me a little bit crazy. Hehehe. But then again, I totally love this story. I am a sucker for a good love story and I got it here.

~Playlist~

I think Can’t Stop is just the perfect song for this book. I dare you to read the book while listening to this song the entire time. You’ll be grabbing for that glass of cold water too. Hahaha! Kidding aside, I just thought this song fits how Alayna and Hudson can’t seem to stop and get enough of each other. It’s like they really need each other that much, and not just the physical aspect of it. Like I said, they’re good for each other to heal their own pasts. Fix You, I think is obvious. And I like some Coldplay sometimes so I had to squeeze that in. Perfect Now is my song when they are “on-duty” and playing pretend. Catalyst is a song with deeper meaning but these lines are what stood out for me:
You'll be the vein, you'll be the pain, you'll be the scar
You'll be the road rolling bellow the wheels of a car
And all of the thoughts, oh God Don’t know if I’m strong enough now
You’ll be the vein, you’ll be the pain, you’ll be the catalyst

Laurelin Paige is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. ~Synopsis~

In the follow-up to Colleen Hoover’s #1 New York Times bestseller Hopeless, the charming and irresistible Dean Holder tells the passionate story that has melted thousands of hearts.
In Hopeless, Sky left no secret unearthed, no feeling unshared, and no memory forgotten, but Holder’s past remained a mystery.
Still haunted by the little girl he let walk away, Holder has spent his entire life searching for her in an attempt to finally rid himself of the crushing guilt he has felt for years. But he could not have anticipated that the moment they reconnect, even greater remorse would overwhelm him…
Sometimes in life, if we wish to move forward, we must first dig deep into our past and make amends. In Losing Hope, bestselling author Colleen Hoover reveals what was going on inside Holder’s head during all those hopeless moments—and whether he can gain the peace he desperately needs.

~Review~

First of all, I did not believe even for a little bit that it’s possible for the same story told from a different point of view to be that good but Losing Hope did exactly that and more.

So let me rant for a few minutes here first. Holder & Amy. I know, right?! Did you feel like throwing something or punching and just hurting someone after reading that? I didn’t like that part. And I know that we deal with grief differently but that right there just messed up my head. Anyway, I’m glad there’s not really much that went on with them after that incident. I don’t think I can ever deal with that without losing my mind. Hehehe.

Hope and Less. Hopeless. I’m still at awe with Colleen Hoover’s intelligence and creativity to come up with the meaning behind Holder’s tattoo. I swear, I literally said “Wow” when I first read about the real meaning of that tattoo and reading it again in Losing Hope gave me the same feeling if not more.

This book in my humble opinion has now become one of the best stories ever told. And Holder is now one of the best characters, and yeah fine I’ll say it, one of the best book boyfriends ever. He really did give the best first kiss without the actual kissing. I literally had to stop reading and take several deep calming breaths everytime he and Sky sorta kiss. Yes, it’s that good. No, scratch that. It’s incredible. I’m really glad I read something in this book that was not in Hopeless. And yeah, that’s Lesslie’s letter to Holder. I somehow felt some closure after reading that. I’m happy Holder’s relationship with his parents has gone smoother.

Losing Hope is Holder’s POV when he lost both Hope a.k.a. Sky and his sister Lesslie. If you haven’t fallen in love with Dean Holder in Hopeless (which I think is impossible), you will in Losing Hope. The emotions he felt, his thoughts, everything about him, you’d felt it too in this book. It may be weird but I kinda felt like I was Holder and Sky in this book. I mean, I felt Holder’s pain, his love, his loss and I felt it deeply. And I was Sky when she felt those emotions in finding out who she really was. If you’re an author who can make the reader feel both main characters’ emotions in your book, then I think you’re one of the best authors ever. And Colleen Hoover, you are exactly that.

~Playlist~

The song Stars may seem a bit literal but for some reason I was reminded of Sky when I first heard this song so I have to include it. And Ed Sheeran’s Kiss Me? Well, I’m a big fan of Ed Sheeran and if Kiss Me will not make you think of their kiss then I don’t know what will. Hahaha!

His challenge? Make her fall in love with him.
Her challenge? Play the player.
Until life changes the rules of the game.

Maddie Stevens hated Braden Carter on sight. Arrogant, egotistical, and the playboy of the University of California, Berkeley, he's everything her brother Pearce has taught her to despise. So why, when the girls challenge her to play the player, doesn't she say no? She doesn't know either.

Braden wanted fiery little Maddie the second he laid eyes on her - and he'd do anything to have her, hence why he's agreed to make her fall in love with him. After all, it's the only way he'll get what he wants. Sex. But, as Braden discovers, there's more to the girl from Brooklyn than he ever imagined - and he can't help but care about the broken girl behind those pretty green eyes.

Maddie finds Braden isn't just a walking erection - he actually has feelings. He can be sweet, funny and his good looks don't exactly hurt. That means trouble - but when her brother Pearce turns up in Berkeley begging for her help, she realises Braden and Pearce aren't so alike anymore.

And maybe, just maybe, they're exactly what each other needs.

Soooo... Honestly I don't know how to start this review. Haha! I received an ARC of this book and Book 2 (read my review here) from the author for an honest review.

I was kinda torn with this book! First three chapters I couldn't connect with the story itself. I had to stop for a while to regain my bearings because maybe I was too out of focus since it was my birthday month and my brain is scattered everywhere. LOL.

Then I decided to read it again after a week. I kinda liked it and I kinda not. I find the story lacking in depth. I don't really want to compare it to BD but it's too difficult not to. I can't help but compare Maddie to Abby. Maddie with a brother addicted to drugs and Abby with a father into deep with gambling. Although the plot is different from BD, the characters in TLG are somehow similar to BD's. Well, atleast for me.

But the thing that I enjoyed the most in this book is the banter between characters. I LOVED IT SO MUCH. Haha! I love love love smartmouths and asshats. No, seriously! I found myself laughing out loud with the bantering.

And Kay! Ohmygod, Kayleigh! Did I mention I love book characters that swears a lot? No? Maybe its kinda weird but yes I love swearing. LOL

All in all, although I wasn't crazy with the plot, I fell in love with the whole gang! Like crazy in love with them I want to go back to college and force myself into the group. Haha! And not to mention, a group with hot-as-hell alpha fucking males.

For me, this book is a lighter read compared to those books that have all the fucked-up issues anyone can think of. I emerged from the story scathe-free and that's a good thing because with Maddie's dark past, I still find this book a breath of fresh air.

She's in love with him.
He's trying not to love her.
One night changes everything.

Aston Banks never meant to get close to Megan Harper – not even for that one night. Haunted by a childhood he refuses to face, he knew she could break through every wall he’d ever built and tear them down without even realising she was doing it.

Betraying Braden by starting a relationship with Aston wasn’t on Megan’s to-do list, but the second she sees a glimpse of someone other than the arrogant ass she’s come to know, she can’t walk away.

Aston’s childhood is worse than Megan ever guessed, but as he tries and fails to push her away, it’s clear her love is stronger than the demons that cling to him every day. And now, because of it, he finally has to deal with what he’s buried deep down.

What he doesn’t want to face. What he’s fought against for so long.

And they have to do it all without Braden finding out.

Keeping a relationship secret has never been harder.

**This book can be read as a standalone novel, but reading The Love Game (The Game, #1) beforehand is advised.**
This book deserves a HOLY SHIT opening line for the review.

HOLY SHIT.

Did I say holy shit??? I already said that? Shit.

Mother of all things that's holy!!! ASTON BANKS!!! I LOVE YOU! I WILL LAY MY LIFE DOWN FOR YOU! <<< This is me talking shit. Haha!

**deep breaths**

**reciting a mantra: I will calm the fuck down**

**repeat the mantra until Aston comes to life**

FUUUUUCCCCKKK I CAN'T!!!

Okay, okay, okay...

I need to stop this crazy antics if I want to write a decent and coherent review. I am pretty sure Emma didn't give me an ARC of this book just to be turned into a lunatic. ;)

Soooo... If you read my TLG review, you already know that I wasn't head over heels with the book. Like, it was just okay for me. And honestly, I had doubts with PFK. But when I started reading PFK...

Mother of the mother goose that turned into an ugly duckling!!! I FUCKING LOVE THE BOOK!

It's pretty obvious right? The way I gush now? Like you probably want to put a rag into my mouth?

But that's okay, I'll do it myself just so I can focus on writing sensible stuff. ;)

This book actually confirmed my fear that I am ruined for fucked-up alpha males. Maybe that's why I didn't connect with Braden because he was an easy-go-lucky kind of guy, while Aston here, ohmygod Aston #$@%%!^@&#, had gone through the darkest days a kid should never ever experience. Maybe that is the reason he was able to bag that soft spot in my heart. Oh, oh. When you read the word "bag", what exactly come up to your mind? You know, Aston and bag in the same sentence? LOL.

And Megan, oh Meggy! She can kick asses of those college boys who think they're the greatest gifts to women. She doesn't take shit from people and that is why I loved her too!!!

Reading this book, I became a fan of Emma's writing. I love how she can come up with those banters between characters!

Here are some of my favorites:

***
"He's standing in front of a girl with more highlights than my e-reader."
***
"You're so green you're practically blending in with the grass."
***
"I know why I need sex, asshole," I retort.
"I'm doing it to work out why people like me hang around with fucktards like you two."
***
"The only math I know is that me plus Maddie, minus clothes, equals a product not even algebra can create."
***

Cuuuute! Haha! I love the characters when they open their mouths; smartasses and asshats! LOL

But aside from those funny banters, I love how Emma can conjure sentences that tug a heart. You can really feel the deep emotions just by reading those lines.

These are my favorite tear-jerker lines:

***
"Love is a fickle thing. Just because you have a person out there that compliments you, that calms your storm and feeds your fire, it doesn't mean you'll always have them."
***
A good word can linger with you for a few fleeting moments while  bad one will never leave.
***
"It's good to remember,"
"You gotta remember where you've been to see how far you've come."
***
The one thing coveted above all else, for however long it lasts. The one thing we all want regardless of who gets broken along the way. The one thing that no matter the cost, no amount of money could ever buy it.

The grand prize we play for.

Love.
***
"The beauty of being an outsider is that I can see what you can't."
***
Whatever hate is locked inside his body and whatever hate is burned into his mind, I know that our love can push it out. I believe in the power it gives us.

And that's why I will break my heart over and over again.

I will break my heart to heal his.
***

Emma can seriously write beautiful lines. I honestly believe these are great life lessons. I am definitely a fan now, hands down.

Thank you Emma for writing Aston and Megan's story. They're now one of my favorite couples. And thank you for giving me the chance to read this wonderful book of yours.

4.5 dog-eared pages

P.S. I want to share to you my most favorite scene in the book that made me ugly-cry.

***
"Not everything is made to be shared. Not every scar is on the physical body. Some scars are on the mind. Some scars can't be seen. They're inside, burned in so deeply that they'll never be healed."

Her eyes are earnest and soft. "Just because a scar can't be healed doesn't mean it can't be soothed," she whispers.

I take a deep breath, making a decision I know I'll regret. Making a decision that will change everything.

A decision that will change me.

"Sometimes the dark truth is too much for some people," I warn her.

A decision that will change her.

"Sometimes a light dusting of the truth isn't enough," she responds.

A decision that will change us.

"Is the dark really better than the light?"

She nods. "Sometimes. Sometimes you need to get lost in the dark to truly appreciate the light."
***

Goosebumps every time I read this. Thank you Emma, for this wonderful scene. It's now embedded in my heart.
